Parent/Child Product Websites

Are you looking for a way to differentiate similar products in your catalog without having to create a unique product page for each item?

Parent/Child Product Functionality provides a solution for situations where several products fall under the same general description, but each has different specs. An example would be a distributor that sells cap screws in different materials and lengths. Instead of having to write several different product pages, you create a single “parent” product description that covers the whole category of products. The “children” are all the different options under that parent category.

Is Parent/Child Functionality the Right Option for Your B2B Website?

While it’s the right solution for some businesses, Parent/Child Functionality does have its limitations. You cannot utilize Reorder Capabilities with this functionality, for example. It is also not suitable for situations where you need to supply varying descriptions for products that fall under the same category. Additionally, part number optimization cannot be applied to sites using a parent/child product structure, as there are not dedicated pages for each child product or unique part number.

Ecreative offers two options for adding the Parent/Child Functionality to your website pages:
  • Parent/Child Product Layout: This layout is used when a group of products has one description, one main image but several different model numbers that are based on a set of variables, which we format to be sortable by column.
  • Parent/Child Product Layout with Filters:  This layout is used when a group of products has one description, one main image but several different model numbers that are based on a set of variables. We format these variables to be sortable by column and filterable by spec, using dropdowns or faceted search functionality.
