Linking Methods Part II : Tips

Link Building and Linking Tips

Apart from identifying the most effective methods to attaining backlinks, its equally important to know how to employ these methods effectively.

Here we’ve put together an outline of things to consider when soliciting backlinks. Observing these tips will mean a great deal to the visibility that your site recieves for certain industrial keyphrases, as well as to how ‘relevant’ your backlinks appear to the search engines.

>>Linking Tip #1: Use Anchor Text.
Anchor text is the hyperlinked text that appears in a link. By using strategic anchor text in your links, you can improve your sites visibility for any keyword you like!

For example: Let’s say you have a marketing blog geared towards the industrial market place, and one of your keywords is “industrial marketing blog.” If you post a link back to your site’s homepage, you can post it like this: www.industrialsearchenginemarketing.com or like this, using anchor text: industrial marketing blog.

As you can see, both links lead to the same destination, but the latter assigns more importance to the site for that phrase. By obtaining backlinks with anchor text, you tell the search engines that your site deserves to be at the top for the keyphrase within your anchor text.

**This is also a great method to use when linking internally (or “interlinking”) pages on your site. Rather than saying “Please click here to visit our About page, you can enhance your rankings by instead saying “Also, please visit the about page of our industrial search engine marketing blog.

>>Linking Tip #2: Exercise Consistency. It can be a tough call when determining when the use of anchor text is appropriate. You want to increase your keyword visibility, but also want the search engines to see a pattern in the number of links you have.

Consider this: You can see how many links Google sees coming into your site by typing Link:http://www.yourdomain.com/ into the search box. (thats link, colon, nospace, yourdomain, dotcom) Note that Google counts http://www.yourdomain.com/ differently from www.yourdomain.com or yourdomain.com. For best results, always use the same url formatting.

>>Linking Tip # 3: Dont forget “Deep Links” Deep links are links to pages on your site other than the home page. When listing in directories, its best to link to your home page. However, if your being linked to from a site whos visitors have a particular interest in one of your products or services…lead them to that page. There is no better way to increase the relevancy of your site a whole, while increasing conversions in the process. We recommend striving for approximately 30% of your backlinks as “Deep Links.”

>>Linking Tip #4: Consider the Page Rank.
Page Rank is a term coined by Google, and is a prioprietary algorithm that determines a site’s popularity (and there for relevancy) among other related sites.

Page Rank ranges from 1 -10, 1 being least popular and 10 being the most popular. Page Rank is a factor in Googles algorithm. There for, it makes sense to obtain links from sites that are related to yours, and that have a decent pagerank of 5 or above.
