Google's New Policy on Buying and Selling Links

Google has recently added an official policy regarding the buying and selling of links. I'll focus on the implications of buying links, since you’re not in the business of selling links. Google’s new policy states:

“Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results.”

They go on to say:

“Not all paid links violate our guidelines. Buying and selling links is a normal part of the economy of the web when done for advertising purposes, and not for manipulation of search results.”

You can read the full policy here: Google Webmaster Help Center

So how does this affect you? In all likelihood it won't. If you're purchasing links from industrial directories such as ThomasNet, GlobalSpec, Kelly Search and sites of this nature, this is what Google defines as link buying for "advertising purposes". You use these links to drive relevant qualified traffic to your website, not to increase your *PageRank. If you've paid for links from other directories such as Yahoo or Business.com, these also fall into that category.

You want to be cautious if you're paying for a link building program, or buying bulk links yourself. In light of this new policy, the benefits of doing this may have passed. Here's a simple way to determine whether or not you should pay for a link: Is the site directly related to your industry? Would someone visiting the page have interest in your products or services? If the answer is "no", then don't pay for a link. Focus on quality links, not quantity. You'll get high quality visitors to your site that turn into customers for life and keep Google happy.

*Google PageRank (PR) is a system for ranking web pages. Google assigns a PageRank of 1-10 to web pages based of the number and quality of links that point to that page.

Enhancing your SEO Program

As the year draws to a close, it's time to start thinking about possible enhancements to your Search Engine Optimization Program. One of the advantages of doing search engine marketing with Ecreativeworks is that we not only specialize in SEO, we also provide web development, e-commerce solutions and other forms of internet marketing as well.

As you make your business goals for the year 2008, we would like you to consider some of the following options:

  • Archive Newsletters & Press Releases: This is one way to keep your customers informed on the developments of your company and the industry. It would also be consistent content that is added to your website. Search Engines fancy content!
  • Revisit Your Keywords, Conducting Research & Determining Which Keywords are Important: Are your current keywords ranking well in the search engines? Are there some keywords that aren't as important as others? Are there too many keywords for the amount of pages and content on your site? Let us help you determine which keywords may be more beneficial to you and your site.
  • Create a Blog or Forum: The Search Engines love these! We recently released a blog that was indexed in 6 days! That is fast for a brand new url. If you feel that you have the commitment, this may be the way to go.
  • Link Building and Consulting: As we’ve already discussed, you want highly relevant links to your site. Ecreativeworks will help find these links for you.
  • Content Development: Again, search engines fancy content. Review your website and your keywords. Does each keyword have three or four paragraphs to support it? This is highly recommended.
  • Competitive Analysis: We have a program that can analyze your competitors! Find what they are doing and see why they may be ranking higher in the search results.
  • Usability: Is your website organized in a way that makes sense to the end user? Let us evaluate your website and suggest ways to improve the usability!
  • Website Redesign & Upgrades: Trying to stay up to speed with the different shopping carts and competing websites? Ecreativeworks can help you update your website to be search engine friendly and easier for your customers to use.

Our main goal is to offer new ideas and help you increase your website's visibility. Contact Ecreativeworks or your monthly SEO Account Representative today! We will be happy to review your website and online presence to help you determine your goals and make a plan of action for 2008!
