How Duplicate Content Can Affect Your Google Rankings
Google has been filtering out duplicate content for years which is one reason why most believe their search results are better than its competitors. So how does this affect you as a website owner? If Google thinks your site is using duplicate copy, or if another site is using the same copy as you, then there’s a chance it could hurt your site’s visibility and rankings.
Google defines duplicate content as “…substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely matches other content or are appreciably similar.” In short, if Google decides there are one or more pages with the same content, they will pick only one of those pages to list. This means the other pages won’t rank as high as this page, and in some cases Google may drop the page entirely from its index. Here are some real life examples of duplicate content problems, along with ways to fix it. Duplicate Manufacturer Copy: If you use resellers, than this could affect your website. Sometimes resellers will use your copy word for word on their own websites instead of taking the time to rewrite it. Ideally Google should reward your site for the content, but this isn’t always the case. It’s possible the reseller will be given the credit and your pages will not rank. Solution: Make sure you are aware of what your resellers are putting on their websites. If they want to use your copy, they need to be linking back to your site from those pages. Otherwise, make sure they only use small amounts of your copy – say a paragraph at most per page – or they are really rewriting it and making it unique and their own.
Little or No Content: Google considers everything on your page and if there are only one or two sentences different, they may consider these pages duplicates. These pages may not be included in the index.
Solution: Write longer descriptions for each product or service. We understand in the industrial world that it can be a challenge to write a lot about certain products or services. So as a quick fix, writing descriptive title tags and meta description tags can help.
Printer Friendly Pages: If your site offers printer friendly pages, these will be considered duplicate content. Unfortunately, sometimes Google will pick the printer friendly page over your regular page to list.
Solution: This one is an easy fix. We tell Google not to index your pages by using special tags on your pages that tells Google not to include these pages.
Other Issues: There are other issues that come up which are more complicated but happen less frequently. To read more about these, visit Google’s Blog.
In general, the best way to make sure every page of your site is listed in Google is to ensure that every page has unique meta description and title and at least 3 – 4 paragraphs of unique copy. Exclude your printer pages and keep an eye on what your resellers are publishing on their site. If you do this, you should not fall into the duplicate content trap! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Search Trends in the European Market In November 2007, the European Interactive Advertising Association (EIAA) released their latest findings on the trends of the Internet and T.V.
