7 SEO Basics - February 2010
It's no secret that search engines can bring you new business. But how can you make sure that the search engines can find your website's pages and see them as valuable enough to rank well? Here are seven search engine basics to check to ensure your website is search engine friendly:
-
Title, Meta Description, Keywords: Make sure your page titles clarify what is on the page and that your meta descriptions contain a brief synopsis. This way, users will see what your site is about the instant it shows up in the search results. Saturating them with keywords (without sounding spammy) also helps the search engines find your website.
-
Content: It's important to write content that both your users and the search engines will find relevant. Your most important pages should contain at least 300 words or 12 sentences. By including this amount of content on your website, you are able to saturate for keywords without sounding repetitious and provide highly unique information that the search engines value.
-
Calls to Action: Including a call to action on each page gives potential clients an incentive to convert into a customer. It's important to make it as easy as possible to contact you, request a quote, download a whitepaper, or sign up for a mailing list. By including a call to action you are providing direction for your targeted audience and giving yourself a way to measure your site's success.
-
Navigation: Using clean, clear navigation makes it easy for your audience to maneuver your website and find what they need. By specifying what each page signifies in your navigation, you are providing an easy-to-use site for your current and potential clients.
-
Domain Name: Using an original domain name is important. By providing current and potential clients with a URL that is easy to remember ensures your site can be remembered and revisited in the future (if the site has valuable content). Also, avoid using hyphens (www.some-company.com) in your domain name if possible. Technically, you will have two versions of your domain name, www.somecompany.com and http://somecompany.com. You will need to choose one or the other to be your 'main' domain name, and redirect the other to the 'main. If you do not, you risk splitting up your back-links and duplicating content.
-
XML Site Map: An XML sitemap will help your site get indexed and cached by Google and other search engines. It's a must have for every website.
-
Clean Source Code: If you want the search engines to be able to search and index your website easily, it's important to provide clean, valid source code for them to follow. Your clients will use your website to find what they want but if your source code isn't easily navigated by the search engines, your site may not show up in search results.
If you follow these basic steps for search engine optimization, you will have greater chances for visibility in search results. Remember, even though you are building a site that the search engines can follow, it's extremely important to develop a website that your targeted audience will want to browse. Creating quality information, a clean design, and easily navigated pages ensures your clients will find what they are looking for.
